The Netherlands, France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom are all connected by the international high-speed rail service known as Eurostar. Most Eurostar trains between the UK and France pass through the Channel Tunnel, which is owned and run separately by Getlink. The Eurostar Group owns Eurostar International Limited (EIL), which runs Eurostar. As part of a planned merger with Thalys, which was authorised in March 2022, Eurostar announced in December 2021 that it intended to relocate its administrative operations from London to Brussels. Being based in an EU nation would make expansion and development easier, which was the driving force behind this decision.

The decision to build a train tunnel in 1986 to create a cross-Channel connection between Britain and France is where Eurostar's history begins.
