The largest retailer of automobile and bicycle goods and services in the UK is Halfords Group PLC, which Frederick Rushbrooke started in 1892. The business, which derives its name from Leicester's Halford Street, began as a wholesale ironmongery in Birmingham. It has expanded greatly over time, offering a variety of goods such as electric bikes, push bikes, accessories, car parts, tools, child seats, and SatNav. Halfords also offers services like basic audio and dash-cam installations, bicycle maintenance, vehicle part installation, and auto servicing.

Halfords' history of growth and acquisition is extensive. In 1931, it opened its 200th store, and in 1968, it opened its 300th. In 1983, the Ward White Group bought the business, and in 1989, the Boots Group bought it. After being separated from the Boots Group in 2002, CVC Capital Partners acquired it in July 2003. Halfords went public on the London Stock Exchange in June 2004. The business also expanded into Central Europe, launching its first location close to Prague in June 2007 and five further locations there as well as one in Poland during the next two years.

Halfords has concentrated on expanding its motoring services division in recent years. In June 2014, it purchased the British bicycle maker Boardman Bikes Ltd., and in May 2016, it bought Tredz Bikes, an online supplier of high-end bicycles and riding accessories. Wheelies, the leading UK supplier of replacement bicycles for insurance companies, was also purchased by Halfords for £18.4 million. By 2023, there will be over 250 garages with the Halfords Autocentre brand that offer MOTs, auto maintenance, and repairs. The business continues to encourage and assist its consumers in a lifetime of driving and bicycling.
