Leading meal-kit business HelloFresh was established in Berlin, Germany, in November 2011. The publicly traded company has expanded to become the leading US provider of meal kits and has a sizable presence in several other places, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and numerous European countries. The company's business strategy is to prepare and deliver the materials for a meal to consumers, who then use the accompanying recipe cards to make the meal. This service normally offers a selection of about 19 recipes and three two-person dinners every week for about $60 to $70.

Dominik Richter, Thomas Griesel, and Jessica Nilsson formed the business, which was first financed by Rocket Internet, a German startup studio business. Early in 2012, they began sending meal kits to paying clients, and that same year they expanded to the Netherlands, the UK, the US, and Australia. The business promised to be delivering 1 million meals per month by 2014. After raising $10 million in 2012 and $7 million in 2013, they raised $50 million in a fundraising round in 2014.

HelloFresh has demonstrated a dedication to ethical sourcing and sustainability. HelloFresh SE, which debuted in Spain in November 2022 under the brand HelloFresh, pledged to use "100% Spanish raised beef, chicken, and pork." Following a study by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which accused Thai farmers of forcing southern pig-tailed macaques to pick coconuts, they declared the following year that they would stop importing coconut milk from Thailand. HelloFresh's Climate Labelling Initiative, which alerts customers to meals that emit up to 85% less CO2e, was introduced in November 2021.
