The Hargreaves family still owns Matalan, a well-known British store of clothing and home goods that was founded by John Hargreaves in 1985. The corporation has its headquarters in Knowsley, Merseyside, and over the years, it has had a tremendous impact on the retail sector. By 2020, Matalan would have approximately 13,000 employees, 230 stores around the United Kingdom, and franchise locations in the Middle East. The company's product line, which meets a wide spectrum of consumer needs, includes clothes and home goods.

In Bamber Bridge, a town close to Preston in Lancashire, the first Matalan store was established. The business expanded quickly and had fifty locations by 1995. The business moved its corporate headquarters from Preston to Skelmersdale, also in Lancashire, in 1997. In 1998, Matalan was listed on the London Stock Exchange; however, the Hargreaves family again took Matalan private in October 2006. In 2014, the corporate offices relocated to a newly constructed location in Knowsley, Merseyside. With a significant presence in the Middle East thanks to a franchise arrangement with BTC Fashion General Trading, a company based in Qatar, Matalan is continuing to widen its market.
